The Power of the Youth Movement

Nov 28, 2011

Since one rainy April morning in 2004, Cell Phones for Soldiers has been founded and led by America’s youth. At 12 and 13 years old, Robbie and Brittany Bergquist began a journey that would use the power of the youth movement to raise funds and empower others.

The mission of providing troops overseas with the opportunity to call home resonates with kids of all ages. From Boy Scout troops to church groups to youth groups, gently-used cell phone drives have been conducted nationwide and year round to raise valuable funds for calling cards. This program wouldn’t be possible without the support of the young and powerful.

Julia Z. is a nine-year-old supporter of Cell Phones for Soldiers and was recently recognized for her service to our troops.

“My name is Julia, and I am 9 years old. You sent me a Certificate of Appreciation about a year ago. Since then I have collected over 500 phones for your organization.

I wanted to let you know that just recently, my mother sent in an entry to the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program for me being so involved in Cell Phones for Soldiers. I found out that I am a store-level winner. I am being considered for the Regional level as well.

My mother asked me to write you to let you know that your cause is a wonderful thing for me to be involved with. Just this past Christmas, my mom’s friend’s son was overseas in the Army. He called his mom on a pre-paid card from Cell Phones for Soldiers that he and his whole platoon received. He asked his mom who the little girl was at church collecting for CPFS and she told him it was me. I felt so happy knowing that these people got to call home to their families and it was someone who I know personally.

Thank you for all you do and for allowing me the chance to be a part of this as well.”

This story of caring is remarkable and one that needs to carry on to tomorrow’s leaders.

Similar to Julia, the Army and Air Force Exchange and Santa Rita Wines are helping our troops call home for free this holiday season. Click here to have a free, pre-paid, 60-minute calling card sent to your deployed loved one!
